A random assortment

What has precluded me from writing lately are thoughts, such as “I don’t have a theme” or “I don’t have the time to write much text”. So, I am resolving to post more, even if it means writing less and just sharing some things I’m loving. So here it goes….

I’m loving Rose Gold. And while searching to for something to go with my newish cuff….

I found this Paige Novick necklace (same designer as bracelet), which comes in regular or Rose Gold.

Image

It’s bold, it includes both warm and cold tones of metal, and it can be worn on a night out, with simple black, or dressed casually to work with a blazer. The perfect accessory you will wear all the time, found here.

This designer has a lot of interesting stuff to check out.

Some people balk at paying a lot for a tee shirt, or a cotton tank top. However, the good ones will last, the good ones don’t just look like a tee shirt, and the good ones are so effortlessly chic, you’ll wear them with shorts, jeans, heels, blazers, dressed up, dressed down. Your per use wear will be worth it. And, cut and material DO matter.

Enza Costa at shopbop.

Kain Label is one of my favorites for effortless, well-made tees, tanks, and maxis.

Wow, with no theme, I realized I have created an outfit! The above tank, in black or grey. A chunky necklace, and these Rag and Bones (same style I’ve raved about before, now in a lighter color, perfect for Spring). Pair with skinnies, and a blazer.

At Bergdorfs or shopbop

Add a printed scarf, for a pop of color and contrast.

Or, stay neutral, but add some texture with knotted tassles….

….or volume with multi-wrap, chunky scarves from Paula Bianco

Voila! A few easy steps to effortlessly chic!

Getting Ready for Fall: Fall Obsessions #1

Now that I’m done with my company’s Strategic Plan (hence the blog hiatus), it’s time for some real planning – fall wardrobe planning!

The end of summer. To some, those words bring sadness, nostalgia for long summer days, and jacket-less nights.

Not for me, I love Fall! (and that statement is unrelated to the fact that my summer actually arrives in “Fall”). I especially love the wardrobe options. Lots of opportunities to accessorize with layers. While Summer  is not over yet, stores are brimming with sweaters, boots, booties, scarves, jackets, and suede shoes.

I’ve already seen so much that I love, so I’m going to write a few posts about my “Fall Obsessions”

Fall Obsessions #1: Comfy weekend wear.

Some of you have heard my opinions about weekends spent in yoga, or other workout, gear. Well, to each his own, but it’s just as easy to throw on an oversized button down or “boyfriend sweater”, riding pants or leggings, and a pair of flat shoes (or, for some of us, “semi-flat”)…and you look so much more put together and presentable. And appropriate. Unless you are truly spending your entire day working out.

Last year, I became so obsessed with a pair of black riding pants, I ordered 3 pairs for backup. Perfect to pair them with? The “Perfect Shirt” by Madewell. Inexpensive, oversized, casual. I will wear this one to death.

Perfect Chambray Ex-Boyfriend Shirt in Ferrous Wash

I also love their other Chambray options which can be found here. Such a steal! Most are long enough to cover your butt so don’t worry about wearing them with tight pants. Madewell loves Chambray… and so do I!

Sweaters.

I love drape-y, comfy sweaters. No one can argue that these are less comfortable than a fleece (gasp! unless you’re hiking, or legitimately post workout).

A summer night in San Francisco was the perfect time to debut my new over-sized sweater from Joie. I want this in every color.

Vince: You continue to make my favorite “I’m stylish, but I’m not trying too hard” sweaters. Loving the bulky cowl neck this season. Unless this looks like a dress on me, it will be mine! Found at shopbop, and many other online stores.

And a slightly different style.

I’m a little embarrassed about how many booties I have in my closet (and more so by how many more I still want!). But they are just SO great. Cute, often comfy, don’t require socks, and super stylish. Some picks.

Kors Wayland. Casual (but good) wooden stacked heel, in 2 beautiful browns. I love the Whiskey color, pictured on the left.

More from Madewell. Both the Barnwood bootie (left, flatter heel) and the Zipcode bootie (slightly larger heel and rounded toe) are super cute.

The Barnwood Boot  The Zipcode Boot

Rag and Bone’s newest version of their Harrow Booties. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Thankfully, I’m not tempted because they were terribly uncomfortable on my feet (but according to reviews, very comfortable to some)

I decided to embrace the wedge bootie this year. I needed a new go-to weekend shoe and what is more practical than a wedge??? I treated myself to these Chloe wedge booties and I’m so excited to wear them! The lighter color was amazing…just not on me.

For more bootie options, you can see my old blogpost here.

Skinnies + oversized shirt/sweater + booties = stylish and comfy weekend wear. You can definitely go 100% flat on the shoes (not me!) to make it even more casual and comfortable. More Fall Obsessions to come…and in the meantime, enjoy those summer days!

Spotted: Serena’s Theodora and Callum Scarf

While Serena’s wardrobe on Gossip Girl is quite enviable, many of the pieces are not exactly budget-friendly (or practical). But, lately she has been sporting some fabulous scarves at prices not just for those Upper East Siders.

Here she is wearing Theodora and Callum’s Orange Multi Diamonds Scarf, perfect for adding a pop of color to any outfit.

Serena, aka Blake in real life, sports her own Theodora and Callum here.

Many celebs have embraced the brand.  Check it out!

Another fabulous scarf worn by Serena is this Green and White We are Owls “City of Kings” scarf, worn in last week’s episode, available here. We are Owls has a lot of beautiful scarves, also available on net-a-porter, shopbop, and Saks.

Enjoy…

Style Spotlight: Tory Burch

I have to admit  – I’ve never been a fan of Tory’s oversized logos placed on somewhat basic and overpriced styles. They were just so overtly “Tory”. But this season I am very pleased with some of her very classy (and way more subtle) pieces. Here are a few:

I will soon be the proud owner of this denim dress, assuming it works. A bit of stretch adds much flatter to this dress. Available at ShopbopNet-a-porter and Saks.

Beautiful colors, but also surprisingly neutral. The all-season gauze and wool Collage Print Scarf is classy, fun, and an instant pick-me-up for an otherwise simple (boring?) outfit. Great small piece to bring on vacations. You can buy it at shopbop. Also available at Nordstrom and toryburch.com.

The adorable Small Suede Briefcase, done in on-trend pastels. Available at Tory Burch.

Got extra cash from your tax refund? Invest in a #ToryBurch Small Suede Breifcase. http://news.instyle.com/photo-gallery/?postgallery=108598#6

The beautiful, large (and not inexpensive) Robinson Weekender Bag exudes class and effortless chic. Available at Neimans.

Finally, the Calyca Wedges, also pictured with my hopefully-soon-to-be denim dress above. While I don’t LOVE the cork siding, I’ll excuse it because I love the color and pattern. So fun!

Thank you, Tory, for giving us some beautiful things to look at this Spring/Summer!

The Bag: A Girl’s Best Friend

Guys don’t get it – they’re huge and heavy, or they’re too small to fit anything (even a phone – i’m guilty of this one), they seem to swallow everything important to you when you need it most, you need multiple styles, and colors, and fabrics – but hey, they don’t have to understand what we all do:  a bag is so much more than a way to carry your stuff. They are possibly the best accessory EVER (ok, maybe tied with scarves).

While purchasing my own Rachel Zoe tote, I came across my new obsession that I had to share. Obsession? Yes, I look at this picture once a day (sometimes more), I picture my entire wardrobe with it, I picture going places with it. This picture can not do it justice. Trust me. I would not be obsessed with a simple black bag. It has texture, it drapes, it’s dramatic. It’s perfect. Except for the fact that it’s not mine…YET!

Rachel Zoe Joni Raffia & Leather Hobo Bag

While we’re discussing lust-worthy obsessions (and before moving on to some more “practical” buys),  here is my other: The Proenza Schouler PS1.

Proenza Schouler PS1

Now, for some more practical (read: budget friendly) ideas, specifically for summer in light fabrics, or fun colors.

Nothing says Summer like Straw. If I didn’t have one so similar, I’d be ordering this ASAP.

Big Sur Straw Tote by Flora Bella International

Mar Y Sol makes straw totes (and smaller bags) in some great colors. Here is their classic.

From Madewell, the Bamboula Ltd. Beach Bag. I think I need to live near the Beach because I just have no use for my cravings for multiple straw bags….

Bamboula Ltd. Beach Bag

Similar look is this Rebecca Minkoff. This yellow is not for the faint-of-heart! A perfect summer statement bag.

Another from Madewell, the Mini Mailbag. Comes in pale pink and a mustard yellow. A very budget-friendly way to rock the cross-body trend, and brighten up your outfit.

The Mini MailbagThe Mini Mailbag

Another cross-body I’m loving is this Kate Spade, Essex Stlye in “Spring Red”

Finally, a bright summery, super-affordable clutch. This one is big (ie., statement bag, i.e, I love. Who doesn’t want to make a statement??)

With bags, I like having a combo of  “investments”, alongside more moderate/fun choices. If it’s trendy, no need to spend. Just look for great style and details. Piperlime is a great source to get a sense for stlyes you like because it’s curated.

And remember, you can never have too many bags (well, until you don’t have room to store them…)

Two Sweets Worth Splurging On. I promise.

Cocoa Brownies with Browned Butter and Walnuts

Cocoa Brownies with Browned Butter and Walnuts

This brownie recipe is from Epicurious. It’s extra fudgy and rich, and the browned butter is just perfect. You will never want to make another brownie recipe. The recipe tells you to “melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, until butter stops foaming and browned bits form at bottom of pan.” If you’re wondering whether you will be able to see this happening, don’t’ worry, you most certainly will.

ingredients

  • Nonstick vegetable oil spray
  • 10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder (spooned into cup to measure, then leveled)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs, chilled
  • 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon unbleached all purpose flour
  • 1 cup walnut pieces

preparation

Position rack in bottom third of oven; preheat to 325°F. Line 8 x 8 x 2-inch metal baking pan with foil, pressing foil firmly against pan sides and leaving 2-inch overhang. Coat foil with nonstick spray. Melt butter in medium saucepan over medium heat. Continue cooking until butter stops foaming and browned bits form at bottom of pan, stirring often, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat; immediately add sugar, cocoa, 2 teaspoons water, vanilla, and 1⁄4 teaspoon (generous) salt. Stir to blend. Let cool 5 minutes (mixture will still be hot). Add eggs to hot mixture 1 at a time, beating vigorously to blend after each addition. When mixture looks thick and shiny, add flour and stir until blended. Beat vigorously 60 strokes. Stir in nuts. Transfer batter to prepared pan. Bake brownies until toothpick inserted into center comes out almost clean (with a few moist crumbs attached), about 25 minutes. Cool in pan on rack. Using foil overhang, lift brownies from pan.

Ginger Molasses Cookies

Ginger Spice Cookies

This recipe is also from Epicurious, and sure to capture your taste buds, even if you claim to not have a sweet tooth (I don’t understand that concept!). The spice and the slight hint of saltiness perfectly balance the molasses and dark brown sugar. The pieces of crystallized ginger add a welcome surprise in every bite. And they bake with a perfect crinkle, making them look even more appetizing. Perfect for breakfast, with coffee, in my opinion.

ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup chopped crystallized ginger
  • 1 cup (packed) dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup mild-flavored (light) molasses

preparation

Combine first 6 ingredients in medium bowl; whisk to blend. Mix in crystallized ginger. Using electric mixer, beat brown sugar, shortening and butter in large bowl until fluffy. Add egg and molasses and beat until blended. Add flour mixture and mix just until blended. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly butter 2 baking sheets. Spoon sugar in thick layer onto small plate. Using wet hands, form dough into 1 1/4-inch balls; roll in sugar to coat completely. Place balls on prepared sheets, spacing 2 inches apart.

Bake cookies until cracked on top but still soft to touch, about 12 minutes. Cool on sheets 1 minute.

Spring Into Style

Time to update your wardrobe with some brighter, lighter, and more fun pieces!

Rachel Zoe. Love her or hate her, she makes some beautiful stuff. This bag is no exception. High on the glamour quotient, but still effortlessly chic. Sold at Shopbop, Nordstrom (in a different size), and Saks.

More from Rachel…The Madison Colorblock Shift Dress. Cute, fun, and sophisticated all at once (and keep in mind, it won’t be as short, unless you’re 5’10” like this model!) Buy it at shopbop, piperlime, Saks, Neimans or Bergdorf.

This is a great versatile, dress-me-up, or dress-me-down strapless piece in a perfect pop-of-color for Spring. Even the name says “go have fun!”. Rebecca Taylor Dress – Take Me Out Strapless. Great with neutral wedges. Also available at Bloomingdale’s.

Here is a great alternative to a totally flat sandal, but with the same effortless, casual feel (and comfort). The Ash Orchid Wedge Sandal. Also available in Stone and Black on Endless.

Admittedly, quite a splurge but I had to share this beautiful, drapey leather jacket because I love it, and it epitomizes effortless chic. However, I’d pair it with something else – anything else  – other than a trend to stay away from…the floral pant. Remember, just because its on-trend, doesn’t mean its stylish! The Veda Manet Leather Jacket.

When you’re buying for Spring, think bright colors, light tops, and layers. Use lightweight scarves to add color and texture. And make sure to find a fun colored bag to instantly update your outfit. Bags in cobalts, corals, and various shades of green are in no short supply this spring. Now to find one to call your own…

Tips from NYC

Actually, I should say – tips I got from the always fashionable, perfectly put together, and beautiful Lauren R (now Lauren K) from NYC.

I had the pleasure of staying at Lauren’s West Village apartment this weekend. The best part about sleepovers is trying your girlfriends’ beauty products!

A couple of reccs:

Serge Normant hair products. Serge Normant is a legendary hair stylist to celebrities like Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Jessica Parker and so many more. I tried the hairspray and volumizer, and loved both. The hairspray is that perfect balance – creates hold, but isn’t stiff. Also smells amazing! Luckily available online, for those of us who don’t live down the street from the salon, at Barneys or Sephora.

Nars brightening serum. I did not try this, but it came highly recommended. The random, unsolicited compliments Lauren received upon wearing this product are proof enough that it works! Available at any department store where Nars is sold.

Laura Mercier Caviar Stick. “Inspired by Laura Mercier’s cult classic Caviar Eye Liner, Caviar Stick Eye Colour offers a new technique to enhance the smoky eye look.” I can vouch for this one! Available at any department store where Laura Mercier is sold, or online at Sephora.

I left my sleep mask on the plane, so Lauren lent me hers. I have already ordered my own. Super comfortable and masterfully blocked the light. Available in many colors, but I personally like Lauren’s ‘Princess Pink’ pictured below. Available here. Some Dream Essential masks also available on Amazon.

Dream Essentials Escape Luxury Travel and Sleep Mask with Earplugs and Carry Pouch, Princess Pink

It’s been a long time since we studied abroad, and shopped the streets of Paris, but I will always look to Lauren for beauty and fashion tips. If you saw her, you would too! Stay tuned for a possible guest blogger, sure to make you purchase everything she recommends….
