Getting Ready for Fall: Fall Obsessions #1

Now that I’m done with my company’s Strategic Plan (hence the blog hiatus), it’s time for some real planning – fall wardrobe planning!

The end of summer. To some, those words bring sadness, nostalgia for long summer days, and jacket-less nights.

Not for me, I love Fall! (and that statement is unrelated to the fact that my summer actually arrives in “Fall”). I especially love the wardrobe options. Lots of opportunities to accessorize with layers. While Summer  is not over yet, stores are brimming with sweaters, boots, booties, scarves, jackets, and suede shoes.

I’ve already seen so much that I love, so I’m going to write a few posts about my “Fall Obsessions”

Fall Obsessions #1: Comfy weekend wear.

Some of you have heard my opinions about weekends spent in yoga, or other workout, gear. Well, to each his own, but it’s just as easy to throw on an oversized button down or “boyfriend sweater”, riding pants or leggings, and a pair of flat shoes (or, for some of us, “semi-flat”)…and you look so much more put together and presentable. And appropriate. Unless you are truly spending your entire day working out.

Last year, I became so obsessed with a pair of black riding pants, I ordered 3 pairs for backup. Perfect to pair them with? The “Perfect Shirt” by Madewell. Inexpensive, oversized, casual. I will wear this one to death.

Perfect Chambray Ex-Boyfriend Shirt in Ferrous Wash

I also love their other Chambray options which can be found here. Such a steal! Most are long enough to cover your butt so don’t worry about wearing them with tight pants. Madewell loves Chambray… and so do I!

Sweaters.

I love drape-y, comfy sweaters. No one can argue that these are less comfortable than a fleece (gasp! unless you’re hiking, or legitimately post workout).

A summer night in San Francisco was the perfect time to debut my new over-sized sweater from Joie. I want this in every color.

Vince: You continue to make my favorite “I’m stylish, but I’m not trying too hard” sweaters. Loving the bulky cowl neck this season. Unless this looks like a dress on me, it will be mine! Found at shopbop, and many other online stores.

And a slightly different style.

I’m a little embarrassed about how many booties I have in my closet (and more so by how many more I still want!). But they are just SO great. Cute, often comfy, don’t require socks, and super stylish. Some picks.

Kors Wayland. Casual (but good) wooden stacked heel, in 2 beautiful browns. I love the Whiskey color, pictured on the left.

More from Madewell. Both the Barnwood bootie (left, flatter heel) and the Zipcode bootie (slightly larger heel and rounded toe) are super cute.

The Barnwood Boot  The Zipcode Boot

Rag and Bone’s newest version of their Harrow Booties. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Thankfully, I’m not tempted because they were terribly uncomfortable on my feet (but according to reviews, very comfortable to some)

I decided to embrace the wedge bootie this year. I needed a new go-to weekend shoe and what is more practical than a wedge??? I treated myself to these Chloe wedge booties and I’m so excited to wear them! The lighter color was amazing…just not on me.

For more bootie options, you can see my old blogpost here.

Skinnies + oversized shirt/sweater + booties = stylish and comfy weekend wear. You can definitely go 100% flat on the shoes (not me!) to make it even more casual and comfortable. More Fall Obsessions to come…and in the meantime, enjoy those summer days!

Spotted: Serena’s Theodora and Callum Scarf

While Serena’s wardrobe on Gossip Girl is quite enviable, many of the pieces are not exactly budget-friendly (or practical). But, lately she has been sporting some fabulous scarves at prices not just for those Upper East Siders.

Here she is wearing Theodora and Callum’s Orange Multi Diamonds Scarf, perfect for adding a pop of color to any outfit.

Serena, aka Blake in real life, sports her own Theodora and Callum here.

Many celebs have embraced the brand.  Check it out!

Another fabulous scarf worn by Serena is this Green and White We are Owls “City of Kings” scarf, worn in last week’s episode, available here. We are Owls has a lot of beautiful scarves, also available on net-a-porter, shopbop, and Saks.

Enjoy…

Style Spotlight: Tory Burch

I have to admit  – I’ve never been a fan of Tory’s oversized logos placed on somewhat basic and overpriced styles. They were just so overtly “Tory”. But this season I am very pleased with some of her very classy (and way more subtle) pieces. Here are a few:

I will soon be the proud owner of this denim dress, assuming it works. A bit of stretch adds much flatter to this dress. Available at ShopbopNet-a-porter and Saks.

Beautiful colors, but also surprisingly neutral. The all-season gauze and wool Collage Print Scarf is classy, fun, and an instant pick-me-up for an otherwise simple (boring?) outfit. Great small piece to bring on vacations. You can buy it at shopbop. Also available at Nordstrom and toryburch.com.

The adorable Small Suede Briefcase, done in on-trend pastels. Available at Tory Burch.

The beautiful, large (and not inexpensive) Robinson Weekender Bag exudes class and effortless chic. Available at Neimans.

Finally, the Calyca Wedges, also pictured with my hopefully-soon-to-be denim dress above. While I don’t LOVE the cork siding, I’ll excuse it because I love the color and pattern. So fun!

Thank you, Tory, for giving us some beautiful things to look at this Spring/Summer!

Spring Into Style

Time to update your wardrobe with some brighter, lighter, and more fun pieces!

Rachel Zoe. Love her or hate her, she makes some beautiful stuff. This bag is no exception. High on the glamour quotient, but still effortlessly chic. Sold at Shopbop, Nordstrom (in a different size), and Saks.

More from Rachel…The Madison Colorblock Shift Dress. Cute, fun, and sophisticated all at once (and keep in mind, it won’t be as short, unless you’re 5’10” like this model!) Buy it at shopbop, piperlime, Saks, Neimans or Bergdorf.

This is a great versatile, dress-me-up, or dress-me-down strapless piece in a perfect pop-of-color for Spring. Even the name says “go have fun!”. Rebecca Taylor Dress – Take Me Out Strapless. Great with neutral wedges. Also available at Bloomingdale’s.

Here is a great alternative to a totally flat sandal, but with the same effortless, casual feel (and comfort). The Ash Orchid Wedge Sandal. Also available in Stone and Black on Endless.

Admittedly, quite a splurge but I had to share this beautiful, drapey leather jacket because I love it, and it epitomizes effortless chic. However, I’d pair it with something else – anything else  – other than a trend to stay away from…the floral pant. Remember, just because its on-trend, doesn’t mean its stylish! The Veda Manet Leather Jacket.

When you’re buying for Spring, think bright colors, light tops, and layers. Use lightweight scarves to add color and texture. And make sure to find a fun colored bag to instantly update your outfit. Bags in cobalts, corals, and various shades of green are in no short supply this spring. Now to find one to call your own…

Dressing with simplici-tee

With the warm temps this week, I’m getting ahead of myself thinking about summertime. One of my favorite simple pieces is the tee shirt dress. It’s literally one of the easiest things you can put on and you look SO much more put together than if you wore a tee shirt/tank top and shorts, or jeans. Also, one of the greatest things you can pack on a vacation because you can dress it up or down so easily.

However, I have seen way too many faux pas with this style so pay attention to:

The material! Thin jersey is so unflattering and shows off lines (and anything and everything else you don’t want people to see). Only super toned celebrities can get away with a really thin jersey dress (and they know better than to wear them). Make sure the material is substantial.

The shape! Anything baby doll-ish should have left your closet in junior high. If the tee shirt dress is a loose, shapeless style, belt it. Otherwise go for something with some fit, that will show you have a waist. This doesn’t mean it needs to be tight. In fact, for the warmer months, stay away from tight  – it looks like you’re trying too hard. Here is an example – looks very effortless and loose, but not too big and shapeless. This dress is Soft Joie, which makes great, wearable dresses.

What I like about the next dress: Stripes. Always great; really great in the summer. Fitted bottom (because the top is a bit drapey). Even though the top is drapey, its not so loose that you lose your shape. Ruching on bottom=flattering. Looks like a thick material. This dress would be so cute with a leather wrap bracelet

Can’t go wrong with simple black. And this one has potential to be dressed up more. James Perse. Great, flattering cut and neckline.

James Perse Threequarter Sleeve Fitted Vneck Dress in Black

If you want to be a bit more covered up, try this James Perse style.

I love this simple maxi, also Soft Joie (that, and James Perse are my go-to’s when searching for tee shirt dresses). Great detailing around the hips should make this more flattering than a straight down tee.

Not a tee shirt dress, but same idea (plus, I just love it). DVF teamed up with denim designer Current Elliot to make this chic denim wrap dress that I know I’d have in my closet forever….if it was not sold out in my size already.

In terms of styling, keep it simple. Flip flops, flat sandals or wedges (great for night instead of heels which I would stay away from). Think about adding a more fun belt than the dress may come with, to add color, or a pattern to your outfit. Use jewelry and clutches to quickly change the look. Next time you’re packing for a vacation you won’t regret owning one of these!

3 Letters That Mean Style

And I’m not talking about SJP.

DVF. Diane von Furstenberg. Best known for her iconic wrap dress, DVF has been designing since the 1970’s and turns out fabulous, figure-flattering clothes every season. This season, I (and apparently the critics at Fashion Week!) are loving her bold prints and bright colors.

The Mara top is a forever piece. Whether neon is “in”, or not, if you have the skin tone to pull this off, you SHOULD. Amazing, classic style.

Wanting this maxi dress, but I’m still not convinced I can even wear maxis…the back is so great, there are pockets….so casual chic. I think I’ll give  maxis another try for this dress.

Love this canvas tote. So basic, but so much more interesting than a plain, boring bag. Great pop of color on the handle. Also, available at shopbop.

I already wrote about some beautiful DVF scarves, but here are two more. This Bubsy scarf has just hints of color, making it neutral enough to wear with everything, but not be boring.

Diane von Furstenberg  Diane von Furstenberg  Diane von Furstenberg

Same with the Braden scarf.

Pair these leather and printed calf hair ballet flats with just about anything to turn up the wow-factor. Available at net-a-porter.

There are just too many gorgeous printed dresses, wrap or not, to post about but here is classic DVF. You can wear this dress so many ways (flats, heels, even dressy sandals). If you paired this with a brightly colored clutch, scarf/wrap, or shoes , it would be fantastic. And so comfortably chic. With DVF, you never look like you’re trying too hard. Available here.

Wardrobe Staple: Blazers

The easiest way to look put together, or to hide an overindulgent weekend??? The Blazer! Wear it over a top, wear it as a top, pair with a dress; the blazer is ALWAYS in style.

Blazers are not a place to skimp, unless you’re just buying something for fun, like a bright, trendy color or style. For the perfect classic, I love Theory. They’re not cheap but they will last. And while they last, they keep looking good. They’re perfectly tailored and don’t lose their shape. Here is the Gabe B Blazer in simple black. I love the one-button look of this blazer.

Or, in this picture (a grey version of the Gabe B), you can see the pinstripe detailing when you roll the sleeves. Being able to roll the sleeves is important to me because it makes the blazer more fun, and less formal (and allows you to display a bracelet!)

Buy it at Bloomies or Nordstrom. Or, Shopbop for no tax or shipping!

If you want to feel less traditional or formal, try a cropped version like this DVF.  Dark or bright cropped jackets look great over a printed dress.

DIANE von FURSTENBERG Reiko Knit Suiting Blazer

Available here.

Or, try more of a schoolgirl look like this super cute navy Madewell, with gold buttons.

And this very similar Juicy Couture.

Club Monaco is another good source for stylish, moderately-priced Blazers.

Blazers-as-business-formal are so a decade ago! Leave it unbuttoned as a jacket, over a tee. Button up with a lacey cami underneath, or wear with a simple sheath dress. Throw on a scarf and you’re polished and ready to go!

Near and dear to my heart: scarves

Rare is a day when I don’t throw a scarf on. They can singlehandedly transform an outfit more than any other piece can. Some ideas:

Tolani. I just love this brand, and so do the celebs.

Here is Jessica Alba (often seen in Tolani scarves) wearing an  Infinity Scarf (in Leopard). Great for daytime with a tank, or more dressed up at night. I may just have to order this one…

Tolani Infinity Scarf in Leopard

I own the Zig Zag style, which is what started the Tolani craze. Pictured here in Pink/Green, but available in multiple color combos.

Diane Von Furstenberg is making GREAT printed scarves this season. Total statement, wardrobe-transforming scarves. Here are a few examples.

Diane Von Furstenberg Printed Scarf

Available here.

Diane von Furstenberg 'Campbell' Scarf

Buy it.

Diane von Furstenberg 'Braden' Square Chiffon Scarf

Buy it.

For a more basic, solid look try this gauzy Theodora & Callum. GREAT colors, and on sale. I think I may go order one in Orange, Turquoise, or Yellow ASAP (I really love the pink but just bought one in a very similar shade). Lightweight scarves are perfect to take on trips, or weekends away, for a cool airplane, or to quickly and easily change the look of an outfit.

Happy accessorizing!

Jean Jackets

I have 3 – one light wash, one medium wash, one dark wash. They all serve different purposes, right? I often wear them as if they are just a top. The light one is my favorite,  especially  for Spring/Summer.

Here are 2 picks for a light-wash jacket. JBrand Slim Stretch, from Net a Porter. I love the cropped, fitted look as well as the stretch.

J Brand Denim J Brand Denim

For a cheaper (but fantastic) version, try Old Navy! In-store.

This year, I’m looking to add a 4th to my collection – in a bright color/neon!  I’m on the lookout for a cheaper version of this Elizabeth and James Lime cropped jacket, or this Orange stretch from Christopher Kane. Stay tuned!

    Christopher Kane

The white tank top and jeans test.

The rule for buying accessories: it should transform a white tank and jeans into a statement! I have been on the hunt for almost a year for great statement earrings. I recently discovered two amazing jewelry designers. Happy Shopping!

Diana Warner. I recently purchased the Elizabeth earrings pictured and I’m obsessed. I wear them with  – well, a white tank and jeans – but also dressed up with the perfect LBD for weddings.

Diana Warner Elizabeth Earrings

Richrocks. Just bought these big sapphire danglers, which I cant wait to wear

Oversized Faceted Sapphire Crystal Dangles

As for the best white (and other color) ribbed tank with the un-pc name, my search for perfection continues, but here are a few ideas:

(Note on wearing tight tanks in light colors – if its really tight (and white, meaning its going to be see through), and you’re not a model, LAYER! put a grey or nude one underneath a white one for more coverage.)

James Perse makes great ones. Available at Saks, Bloomies and online at shopbop.com

Just recently ordered some LA Made from Piperlime.

Finally, Target! These are my new obsession. They are  long, so I love them for layering underneath other tanks, or blazers/sweaters. And they have the right amount of stretch in them (as they should!) and a good neckline. All for $9. I’m stocking up. You can buy them in store, or here.
